Highway 81 Enforcement

A press release from the South Dakota State troopers outlined a joint operation held last week with Nebraska State troopers on Highway 81. By partnering with Nebraska, troopers were able to set up on both sides of the border to run an all day event.

In what was called a “high visibility” operation, SD troopers issued 14 citations for speeding, 12 for seatbelt violations and others not detailed. They stopped 62 vehicles in total during the day-long event meant to raise public awareness of highway safety and enforcement issues. The stated goal was to “encourage safe driving habits.”

Notably, four DUI arrests were made along with two drug arrests. Officers also assisted four motorists during the day. Troopers were focused on criminal offenses as opposed to just issuing tickets.

“It was a great opportunity to work with our fellow troopers from Nebraska to raise public awareness of the need for safe choices on the highways,’’ said Capt. Kevin Joffer, commander of the South Dakota Highway Patrol’s Sioux Falls district office.

One possible benefit of the joint operation wasn’t mentioned in the press release – the opportunity to work with fellow troopers from Nebraska. We have an extensive border shared with Nebraska, and it isn’t always possible for troopers to patrol all the highways that cross between our states. Operating as a team, as in this exercise, gives a chance for both organizations to practice working together.
